Happy Birthday Megumi!

My little girl is having her birthday!
She will be 6 years old on 2 November. And, it seems only a day or so ago that I met her and she chose me to be her Mama.
Megumi is the brightest part of all of my days! She greets her Mama in the morning with a smile!
She is her Mama's mentor. And, Meg is the reason her Mama joined flickr!

"Never underestimate the power of a purr."

Pets are often used for therapy with those people who have chronic diseases. Therapy Pets often visit nursing homes and hospital wards to help bring a smile into a patient's day.
I know that I would be lost without my little fluffy soul mate. I have severe asthma. My cat, Megumi, calms me down when my asthma is causing me troubles.

Meg celebrates "Christmas in July!"

Below is an imaginary conversation with Meg and next a real story...
Meg says "No Mama, I found this and it's my treasure!"
Meg's Mama says "I know, I know... But, Meg it is July. Where did you find this?"
Meg says "I am not showing you because you will find more of my hidden treasures!"
.................................
An amazing day with my girl and I absolutely adore her. Yes, she has many of hidden treasures and I can never find them when I am cleaning. Meg seems to always hide things. I look and look while I am cleaning... I'm always thinking I'll find her treasures. But, I have yet to found where they are.
This is actually a piece of Christmas ribbon from my tree a couple years ago! I was putting my tree away and she was helping me. I thought I had lost this... LOL... but, Meg actually knows where she put it!
And, you thought that only human children could do this type of thing... this is not true if you live with my little girl, Megumi! She loves to hide things. This ribbon was gone after I took my nap. I went to look for it and I haven't found it. But, there will be something new she will be playing with tomorrow when I return home.
And, now... you know the rest of the story... She is smaller and easily crawls in spaces that I cannot get to.

Happy Easter... wishing you all the best for this is a blessed Holiday.
Yes, the Easter Bunny can come (even the "Baby Megumi Bunny!").
But... please, do not forget the reason for the season!

A story from Megumi's kitten world...
This was written a long time ago... on 26 April, 2004...
At the age of 6 months, Megumi went to the clinic to have her (spay) operation. She was not happy to have to stay there, and this was written about Meg by her Mama...
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
To start off with... the ladies at the clinic were very nice. They tried to let me play with other cats and even a smaller dog, but I preferred to being with humans... after all, do they really think that I am a cat?
I tried to explain to those ladies, but you know how humans are... some understand cat tongue and others don't. I don't understand why all humans like myself cannot understand cat dialect! Not too many people understand that I am tri-lingual... I understand English, Japanese, and cat.
My cat dialect now has some borrowed terms from other humans who understand what I am saying... as an example, if I tear open the bag of litter with my teeth and paw with a firm meow, it means that even if my litter change was yesterday, I want another today. In fact from my level it should be right now!
I know that certain things I say, the people I live with understand completely! There is one woman in the apt and she likes to be called Mama... the man really doesn't like the term Dad, but answers to it if the matter concerns something involving me.
The ladies at the clinic explained to my Mama and a friend of hers that I have to be a little quiet this week. It is going to be difficult for me not to play so much this week. I just saw some new toys.
I was told not to play hard for one week, but those things look like they would be fun to play with. This means that all of the new toys for me to enjoy will have to be put up higher until it comes time to see what is in the paper bag.
I don't have any stitches which need to be removed. I think that they used some type of glue that is becoming popular to use.
I was so looking forward to another car ride to the clinic this week because it is fun to be in the car in my carrier, but those plans are not going to come true. The motion of the car just helps me sleep even sounder.
The ladies at the clinic also explained and gave some interesting bottle of orange colored liquid to take in my mouth. I am supposed to take this orange flavored liquid in the morning and night.
We will just have to see how much I take and how much is spilled or dribbled out of my mouth. Imagine... it is orange flavored... couldn't they get original and have it yogurt flavored? I imagine that I can get out of taking it if I try hard enough and of course there is always the possibility that I will spill it.
Who says that there are not plans during the recovery period of time.
So... I think that I should try to take a nap.
Have fun kitty friends, Megumi

Meg - celebrates her "Coming of Age!"
In Japan, January 15th is the "Coming of Age Celebration Day" for 20 year olds... Meg and I had our surprise arrive today... a package came from a friend from the States.

Megumi's "Coming of Age Celebration Day" was today... afterall, she is 3 years old and that means she is really close to being 20 years old! Plus, gifts are always received on that day, too!
Presents include... Tigger acted as the box's postal guide. The Customs and Immigration guide was an adorable "Cuddle Zone" grey kitty. As you can see, Meg thanked her for her assistance by kissing her paw. Meg's toys are a pink feathery fluffy princess wand (already a favorite) and some catnip mice (more favorites). Fun stuff for me are "Chicken Soup for Cat Lover's Soul" (a book that I have always wanted!), "The Wisdom of Cats", kitty magnet clips, a kitty to add to my cell phone, some wonderful fluffy kitty cards, a "Hello Kitty" bookmark, and some fun kitty stickers!
Thank you so very much for making our day so special! Meg is now relaxing from her catnip enjoyment! Meg catnip sniffed her way to her heart's delight... lots of wiggly photos because Meg's head was moving too fast. As her photographer, I tried my best... LOL...

Meg's pastime...
Meg is always spending her days looking out of the window...
She loves to watch the birds... We live on a third floor. So, the view is overlooking the roofs of the homes in the area. There are a couple trees in the area.
Of course, the TV antennas are the favorite perch for the birds in the area. Every home in the neighborhood has one of these on its roof.

We have put an observation stool in front of the window with a cushion on it, too. This makes a favorite place for her to catch the sunshine's rays.

Am I caught?
Meg so seldom does things that you could say are mischief... However, she did enjoy eating the rose leaves from my birthday red roses... These were lovely red roses sent to me from my husband for my birthday...
I took many different photos of her eating the leaves. Then, my husband took the camera and tried to catch her actually eating the leaves.

How interesting, she really never imagined that my husband was taking photos of her in the act... she did move just too quickly for an automatic focus type camera...

This photo is a combination of a couple photos... it shows that on my birthday, she enjoyed her greens... There are probably 30+ photos of that day that are not even close to being in focus... We tried our best... even this is a little fuzzy, it shows a lot of her emotions!
As you can see... She actually realized she was doing something wrong. She kept moving too quickly, turning around, and trying to see what my reaction would be...

She was looking for my reaction. However, I laughed so hard at her... and, between both of us, there was not a dry eye in the apartment!
One of her favorite snacks is green lettuce leaves... crumble or tear them up and she has enjoyed eating these since she was a baby...

Meg's new house
Within one week of Meg’s arrival, we bought her a house. It is actually a three-story kennel.
There were so many stories of cats that play all night and sleep all day long.

One of the books that we read about cats actually mentioned that cats (from an early age) enjoy privacy. This is why they find quiet hiding places.
In order to create this experience for Meg, we decided that covering her house each evening.

Now, as a young lady, Meg looks forward to going into her home at night. We only have to say “Night-Night” to her and she goes to the door for her evening lovin’ before entering her house. After she enters, we can close the door and she feels safe inside under the cotton cover.

Memories...
It was so exciting to have Meg move into our apartment and join our daily life. Even at a young age, she became a star. So many friends always asked how she was when I was chatting with them on the phone.

Her favorite things include sitting in the sunshine. As a little girl, she began to enjoy watching out of the window. The most amazing thing is that Russian Blues have silver tipped fur. Their fur glistens in the sunshine...

Here is another favorite photo of Meg as a baby girl. It seems so hard to imagine that she weighed less than 1 kg when she came to live with us.

Her favorite things include sitting in the sunshine. As a little girl, she began to enjoy watching out of the window. The most amazing thing is that Russian Blues have silver tipped fur. Their fur glistens in the sunshine...

Meg at 9 weeks
It seems like a long time ago... the day that I went to the pet store and there was this lovely young female cat wanting a Mama.

These are the eyes that I looked into and she looked back at me. I still feel so lucky to have looked at her and she looked so deep into my eyes and smiled... Imagine... this was in January 2004...

A Lovely young lady or How I joined the family
Here is more history about Megumi (Meg) the kitten (now full grown young lady) or should I say the best thing that has happened...
In November 2003, my husband asked me what I wanted for our Anniversary. He also mentioned that I could combine it with Christmas if I wanted. Well... on one Saturday morning, as we were going to the supermarket in the car, I mentioned that I wanted to get a kitten. The first reaction was that if we have one... "It is your responsibility!" "Do you have the time to take care of one?" and so on and on were the questions. The outcome was that he agreed that I could have a mixed breed. We went to a reliable vet and they mentioned that there were no kittens available until April/May from the strays that they receive from the neighborhood. I cried after we left the office.
I mentioned that my husband should read some books about cats. He never had a cat and had no knowledge of what to do or how to take care of one. The books from the library showed different pedigrees and he was mesmerized by the Russian Blue's grey color, temperament, and kept staring at the intense green eyes of the adults shown in the books. Well... I began thinking and in January 2004 decided that we should get a kitten and enjoy her during the winter days and nights. I had to go to the Greater Area of Tokyo with my car and decided to check all of the pet stores on my way home. I found 3 kittens at 2 different pet stores. The first Russian Blue female was a little scared of me, her brother was ready to jump down and run around... so I decided that I should go on to another store in that chain. There... I was introduced to another Russian Blue female who immediately began to purr in my hands, moved to the elbow area of my arm and sleep until I had to put her back in her cage (because the store was going to close). So... for 30-40 minutes I was in a dream-like state with what I believed was the kitten that should be mine.
I returned home and explained my day's experience and that she was expensive (but was 10% off because of a January sale). My husband said that it was too much money and again I was disappointed because I thought Meg wouldn't be mine. (We had already selected the name during the first discussion.) He said he needed to think about it until the next morning. At 5:00 the next morning, he turned on the light and announced that he had been thinking and if I am so sure with this kitten, I should go get her as soon as the store opened. I cried because it was true... she was going to be mine! However, my husband demanded that a scratching post, food, litter box, litter, toys, travel case, bed, and so on should come home with Meg, too. Well... off that morning in the early morning, I went with the car to a DIY store for the major purchases before I visited the pet store (just as the store opened).
I arrived and there was Meg. I had to wait till they fed all of the animals and watch her to be sure that she was really the kitten that I wanted. The staff were so helpful with making this possible by moving the cage closer for me to watch her. I held Meg 2 more times and knew she really was the one because she was so happy when she was with me.

Now, she is almost 3 years old. I really realize that Meg is a different type of kitten than typical Russian Blue cats. She absolutely adores people who come for a visit. (I had lots of people over for lunch during her first 2 weeks to get used to having people here.) I stayed home with her for the first 10 days to get her to trust me and feel at home with us. Afterall, we were almost 50 and with a lifetime of a well cared for cat being 14-20 years, we might only have the chance to enjoy one pedigree cat because of the cost.
